What is Redirection and How Does it Affect SEO?

Internet Marketing Outsourcing -- What is Redirection and How Does it Affect SEO?

For those who are non-technical, a 301 and 302 redirects may sound meaningless and strange. But for those in the business of outsource online marketing, these redirects are nothing new. By definition, “redirect” means to direct someone or something to a different place or a different route. In simpler terms, a webpage redirection means assigning a new URL to the webpage. Redirection can also mean a changed design, coding, navigation, etc.

Redirection may be prompted in any businesses’ web pages, for instance, for different reasons and the changes applied will depend on such reason. The usual reasons for redirecting a web page are:

  • Broken URL or URL that is not working
  • An inactive webpage or website
  • A new webpage is being tested for design and functionality
  • A web page is being fixed and while in that process, you want your users to make a detour to another page so as not to disrupt the user’s website experience

To be more specific, a 301 redirect, also known as a permanent redirect, is used to permanently redirect a page. This means that all ‘qualities’ of the redirected page will be passed on to the new or detour page, including PageRank, MozRank, Page Authority and Traffic Value. A 301 redirect is a complete takeover of the old site or page where the changes implemented are meant to be permanent. The old page will then be removed from Google’s index and the new one will take over and replace the old page. Majority of the internet marketing companies employ page redirects as an effort to continuously update their contents.

On the other hand, a 302 redirect which is also known as a temporary redirect, is used to redirect your site visitors into a new webpage with the intention of bringing the redirected or old page back after a specified time or after some changes on the old page have already been completed. With this objective, a 302 redirect will maintain the ‘qualities’ of the old page and not pass on to the detour page. Because the old redirected page will be brought back to the fore, the new or detour page need not absorb the ‘qualities” of the redirected page. Any internet marketing company should be careful in using a 302 redirect correctly. Otherwise it will hurt the site’s search engine visibility.

Effects of Redirects to SEO

Using page redirects can have negative impact mainly on search engine optimization rankings. Using a 301 redirect can slightly lower a web page’s PageRank points. Google, a popular and widely used search engine hinted that a 301 redirect may not always transfer PageRank data from one page to another. And since PageRank affects the number of pages crawled by Google on a given website, a reduce PageRank will impact the site’s visibility to users.

In order to minimize the negative effect of redirects to SEO on your website, it is important that internet marketing companies make sure that all links to their old page from directories or other websites are equally updated. This will probably be the most difficult part of implementing changes on the website because many links may end up on pages which no longer exist or have been abandoned or neglected. By ensuring that all the relevant pages are updated with the redirection changes, improved contents, and good site architecture, the site’s search engine ranking may not be hurt at all.

Why do you redirect a web page?

You redirect a web page because you do not want to commit the mistake of having search engines index the page that no longer exists or the page that is under construction. Broken links are your worst enemies in pulling your ranking down. One wrong move could be very detrimental to a website. You do not only appear as scam to robots but to humans as well. You will lose your credibility and the chance of getting visited by the same user is synonymous to impossible.

A good SEO company is cautious in committing redirection mistakes because the harm it may cause a business may not be controlled and could be fatal.

Targeting Local Market through SEO and PPC

SEO company Philippines - targeting local market through SEO and PPC
If your business provides products or services targeted for local consumers and customers, the best way to increase the reach of your business online is by implementing search engine optimization and paid advertising like pay per click which are geared towards the local market. Local SEO and PPC are two effective ways a business can target the local customers.

In majority cases, increased sales is always guaranteed if your site garnered a higher page ranking in search engine results for local products and services. Therefore, your website should be optimized such that the local market is targeted effectively and efficiently. Website owners should make sure that their websites contain the essential elements that would direct local consumers and customers to your site with their search queries. Following are some local SEO tips which reinforce your local marketing efforts:
  • Register with Local Directories. Local consumers look up for businesses in the local directories or commercial directories that cater to local markets. You may take advantage of free local listings like Google+ Local or Yahoo! Local. Most of the customers use the more popular local online search engines when they look up for products and services.
  • Create a Sub-Domain to Build Trust. It takes a while to generate trust with the major search engines. You may opt to capitalize on the domain trust of established businesses by creating a subdomain with them to gain exposure. Linking your main site in the external domains, you can increase traffic to the site which will eventually help it gain trust with major search engines.
  • Make Your Address Visible. By listing your business address prominently on your main home page or landing page, and all the other pages of your site for customers to see and remember easily.
  • Multiple Markets. If your business caters to multiple local markets, make sure you have a landing page for each of the towns you are marketing. A local customer would not be interested in reading through information about other towns on the same page his town is displayed. A more localized landing page is preferred.
Like local SEO, PPC relies on the principle that targeting a specific geographical area in a marketing campaign will bring in more positive results for a local business. Pay per click (PPC) ad campaigns are inexpensive and do significantly increase traffic even for a specified timeframe only. Learning how to make local PPC work will get your site ahead of the competitors. It all boils down to the effective research of proper and relevant keywords and put them to work.
There are three ways to target a local audience through PPC:

  • Local Keyword Campaign. By using a combination of local geographical modifier and core keywords, a local product or service is advertised within the specified geographic location.
  • Geographic Targeted Campaign. This is the most frequently used campaign to target local market. The search marketer shall simply select the local audience for which the ads need to be displayed – state, city or customer defined area.
  • Ads on local business listings and maps. This option requires setting up an account at the Google+ Local or the Google Local Business Center, and text ads may appear on a Google area map after a local search is made.

These are the benefits of local search engine optimization and local pay per click advertising campaign. These two online marketing strategies will help your business grow and get local presence if properly done. SEO companies in the Philippines can help you obtain local presence and brand recognition.

Is Paid Advertising Advantageous for a Small Business?

outsource online marketing
By definition, advertising is anything that gets a product or business name into the mind of potential customers or clients. It may take many forms, from carefully planned campaigns, to media exposure, or printed materials distributed by hand to random people, etc.

For small businesses, it is quite common to go for paid advertising rather than push efforts on search engine optimization. This is primarily due to the determined time and speed of implementation, and control over the content of the advertisement. Compared to SEO, which takes a longer time to see results, paid advertising is preferred by small business owners for some notable and significant advantages over other advertising forms. Some of the advantages include:
  • Qualified Traffic. There are studies that showed that about 60% of searchers are likely to click on organic search results than pay per click advertising, leaving 40% to be those who are likely to click on paid advertising. Definitely lower than organic advertising, but it’s still 40% which is a significant chunk of your target market.
  • Speed. This is important for small businesses. With paid search advertising, business gets to run fast. It will not take long to be able to see measurable results. And these results can be used as guideline for the necessary changes on the next marketing strategy or campaign. If your business runs on seasonal promotions, it will be more cost-effective to employ PPC (pay per click) advertising than organic SEO.
  • Low Upfront Cost. Paid online advertising may be the most inexpensive advertising option there is. The low startup costs are a great boost for small businesses with limited resources. And depending on your business’ long-term goals, PPC may be started small and gradually increase according to the demands of the business. One needs to work with an expert on search marketing in order to avoid any costly mistake or error.
  • Highly Targeted Promotions. While SEO focuses efforts on capturing all sorts of searchers, paid search targets customers who are looking for your product or service. The searchers who still click on the ad knowing that it is paid are likely to be real customers looking for your product or service.
  • Having control on keywords. Paid search programs allow businesses to target unlimited number of keywords. This means massive opportunity into hitting the words customers use in their search.
  • Flexibility. Paid advertising allows you to see results immediately. The power of paid search is on the speed of implementation and its flexibility. You can test too many variables to determine which are the effective and useful among the keywords, for instance. This is not possible in organic search.
  • Greater control of marketing message. Small businesses can have control on what the advertisements say and how they look on the page. The downside is having limited  number of words you can use but this is compensated fully by the control you have on the content of your ad. Pay per click advertising, for example can allow you to create a landing page for every promotion with the sole purpose of greeting the visitors and push them gently to the right direction.
For most small businesses trying to acquire new clients or customers, or gather leads for conversion, or making a sale on the page, paid search is definitely the way to go. Paid advertising is most certainly advantageous for a small business like yours. To cut on costs and get optimal results, you can outsource online marketing and be on top of your game.

Improving Your Blogging Writing for Your Small Business

Small businesses have looked at blogging as an effective way to maintain connection to their customers and to maintain visibility in the net. However, some businesses have failed to achieve their target goals because they were not doing it right.

The following will be helpful in improving your blogging writing and making the blogs work for your business:

1. Good Quality Writing
A good blog is of good writing quality – good English, correct spelling and grammar, punctuations, contractions, etc.  Blog readers are picky. They get turned off by blogs which don’t get the message across and blogs that are badly written. When they click open your page, they would be expecting a good read and not wasted time.

2. Engaging Tone
Most of the time, bloggers have mistaken blogging for business presentations. While readers would want to read information, they would prefer that the information is presented in an engaging conversational tone. This would encourage them to throw in some comments and feedback, making the blog dynamic and interactive. A good way to a reader’s heart is to stick to a conversational way of writing.

3. Informational instead of Promotional
While one of the purposes of blogging is to promote your business, brand or service, blogs are to be structured such that the ‘promoting’ purpose is subtly achieved. Blogs which are obvious promotional campaigns will be trashed by the readers. They need to see the blogger as a good resource person or authority which can help them with the information they are looking for. Make your promotional innuendos crafty enough for the readers not to easily predict the real purpose of your blogging.

4. Readers not the Blog
When writing blogs for your business, effort must be made to turn the article or blog more about the readers and not the material itself. How do you do that? Think of what the readers would like to see from your blog. Useful information? Tips? Opinion on certain products? These are what will engage your readers into staying on your blog.

5. Know What You Want
Determine the purpose of your blog. Are you aiming at creating a dynamic online discussion on specific topics to engage your customers? By being clear on the purpose, you can be clear with the message you are conveying to the readers. By being specific and narrowing down your targets, you are making your readers understand what you want to tell them. For instance, your blog is aimed specifically at customers who have bad customer service experience (from any business, for that matter), your blog should carry that specificity so that those who will engage in the blog will be clear on what they will comment on.

6. Share Your Experience
First-hand experiences shared on blogs are almost always the run-away winners. Why? Because readers can relate to some of those experiences. In more ways than one, people may have encountered similar situations and will be most willing to share the experience to other readers as well. This can make the blog very dynamic and engaging. Everyone expects to learn a lesson or two from those sharings and that’s what makes it count for the readers.

7. Make Technology a Friend
Technology is available for everyone to use for different purposes. Utilize every available tool to measure the effectiveness of your blogs. Make yourself updated with the latest trends in technology and how you can tap those trends into your blogging. Nowadays, blogging is directed towards the utilization of social media networking sites for a wider reach. Check and see if those new trends would be applicable for your purpose. If others are on it, maybe you should be on it, too.

Try and apply some of these tips the next time you write your blog. You can expect to see some variation on the response or feedback you will get from those reading your blogs. They will definitely be favorable to your business.

Web Design Process Explained

Every business aims for maximum online visibility especially those who know the benefits their business will get out of having their presence felt on the world wide web. And this is why most businesses know that having a functional and user-friendly website is the best and fast way they can reach out to their customers.

Creating or building a website entails a process of careful planning that enables a web designer to carefully put in place all the elements resulting from such planning. The amount of time devoted on the design process will define the quality, or lack of it, of the resulting website.

  • What is the Website for?
This is the first information any web designer should know. Knowing the purpose of the website will help in setting the goals for the site and determine the target audience.

Setting goals for the website will be helpful in evaluating the performance of the site after a certain period. The results of such evaluation will determine if any improvements or enhancements have to be implemented on the website.

  • Start Planning the Design
The best web design starts with a plan and planning should start even before the first wireframe is built.

The design plan should include details about the information architecture – information is classified and described and will be the basis of structure and navigation of the site; planned structure, a sitemap and other technical details like the need for e-commerce, language, etc.

  • Design starts after Planning
This is the core of the entire process – the design phase. This is that part where layout designs, wireframes, colors or color schemes, themes and useful and decorative icons and imagery will be put together on the page of the site.

  • Work on the Site Content
As every designer will tell you, this is another important part of the web design process. The site’s content will get your site or page found by searchers or users through the search engines. The content will also be the reason for people visiting your site. A web designer should have a full grasp and understanding of the content to be integrated into the website design and layout.

  • Build the Site
This is the part where the HTML and CSS will be required. Other technologies like CGI, JavaScript, PHP and databases will also be integrated.

  • Test the Site
While building the site, testing should be done to see if all elements are working and functional. The site should run another test after the design has been completed to make sure that the goals and target audience for which the site is intended have been satisfied and achieved, the technical components are working and the pages are navigating smoothly.

  • Upload the Site to the Web Host
This is the phase where the website is ready to go live on the net. By uploading all the files or pages to the web host provider, the website will run 24/7 for the users to find through the search engines.

  • Maintain the Website
Even after the website is running perfectly on the world wide web, constant updating, addition of new contents and regular housekeeping should be done to make sure users will keep visiting the site.

While some may find the process unnecessarily long and tedious, it pays off in the end because a website design that is well-thought of results to a functional and good quality page for your business.
